Industrialised
Building Systems (IBS)
PSDC is promoting CIDB’s (Construction Industry
Development Board) effort in pushing towards Industrialised
Building Systems (IBS) in Construction Industry. CIDB
Malaysia defines IBS as a construction technique in which
components are manufactured in a controlled environment
(on or off site), transported, positioned and assembled
into a structure with minimal additional site works.
As such, components that are being prefabricated in a
controlled environment on-site are also considered as
IBS.
While there are numerous descriptions of the Industrialised
Building System (IBS) concept by local researchers :
all of the definitions stressed on pre-fabrication and
mass production. The move towards IBS or pre-fabrication
is a global phenomenon and not merely a local or isolated
initiative. With the issues of global competitiveness,
productivity and quality, global industry players are
revisiting IBS as a tool in achieving better performance.
